Reviews

My War, as told by a 13-year-old girl, is an exciting and excellent read about the Nigeria–Biafra war from the perspective of a young girl. Through her eyes, the reader experiences the harsh realities and harrowing moments of war. Despite the many frightening and near-death situations she faced, she still found moments to create and share meaningful stories. The book is filled with extraordinary experiences of survival, including several narrow escapes from death. Along the way, relationships are formed and comradeship helps the characters endure and survive such a difficult time. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is a quick read that is filled with adventure, action, and powerful real-life experiences.

My War: As Told Through the Eyes of a Thirteen-Year-Old by Pamela Wootton is a powerful and emotional story that shows the resilience of a young child during the hardest times. The book is based on real experiences, which makes it even more meaningful and impactful but what landed with me the most was the courage and vulnerability demonstrated with this story. The story follows a thirteen-year-old girl living through the difficulties and dangers of war. Through her eyes, readers see how everyday life changes—things like school, family, and friendships are all affected and get broken apart. Instead of focusing on battles or politics, the book highlights the personal struggles, fears, and resilience of someone who is still growing up while facing such harsh conditions.

My War is a raw and deeply personal account of what it means to grow up during conflict. The perspective of a thirteen-year-old makes the story even more powerful, because the reader experiences the fear, confusion, and resilience in such an honest way. The book is emotional, vivid, and incredibly moving. It highlights not only the tragedy of war but also the strength and resilience of the human spirit. This memoir is a valuable reminder of history and the experiences of those who lived through it. Highly recommended.
